NEW YORK — Today, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) reintroduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Woman Act alongside Pro-Choice Caucus Chairs Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and other members of Congress. The EACH Woman Act is a critical bill that would increase access to health care for low-income people by lifting restrictions on federal abortion coverage and prohibiting political interference with private insurance plans that decide to cover abortion care. National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) Interim Executive Director Sung Yeon Choimorrow issued the following statement in response:

“Today’s reintroduction of the EACH Woman Act is a bold move towards a future where Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities can make their own decisions about pregnancy and parenting, and sends a message to the Trump-Pence administration that we won’t allow them to punish low-income families, people of color and immigrants.

“Many AAPI women, transgender and gender non-conforming people already face social, cultural and linguistic barriers to accessing health care. More than 1 million AAPI women and gender non-conforming people live in poverty, and policies that deny AAPI people Medicaid coverage only make it harder for our communities to thrive. We need lawmakers to lift restrictions on Medicaid so that all of us have coverage for a full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion.

“The majority of AAPI people believe that the decision to have an abortion is a personal decision which should be made without interference from lawmakers. The EACH Woman Act ensures that all people in this country — no matter how much they make, where they live or where they get their insurance — get to make their own medical decisions and determine their own futures.”
