NEW YORK — On Friday, March 24, House Republican leaders pulled out the American Health Care Act (AHCA) right before its scheduled vote. The bill, now considered a “humiliating defeat” by The New York Times, faced rising political and public opposition following the release of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report that estimated 24 million people would lose health insurance. In the days leading up to the House vote, Republicans abruptly removed Essential Health Benefits (EHB) and the repeal bill lost support from even its Republican base. The AHCA failed to pass, thus saving health insurance coverage and preventive care for millions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).
National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum’s (NAPAWF) Interim Executive Director Sung Yeon Choimorrow issued the following statement in response:

“The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum is relieved that the House of Representatives decided against stripping millions of AAPI people of health insurance coverage. The Republican repeal bill was a clear attempt to take away health care access from all but the wealthiest of people in the United States. Those leading AHCA continued to disregard the health and dignity of those who would be most impacted by repeal — women of color, aging women, low-income communities, transgender and gender non-conforming people, LGBTQ communities and immigrants.

“Two million AAPI people were at risk of losing coverage under the ACA repeal bill. In addition, the Republican plan attacked provisions essential for many women of color and low-income women, such as Medicaid expansion and Planned Parenthood funding. NAPAWF applauds the lawmakers who refused to betray vulnerable communities — including fierce AAPI representatives like Rep. Judy Chu, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Doris Matsui and Rep. Colleen Hanabusa. We know that this is just the beginning of a longer fight to ensure equal health care access for all members of our communities, and NAPAWF praises the strong leadership of AAPI women in Congress and all our congressional allies.

“Ensuring health care access is a reproductive justice issue — because all members of our community need the resources and support to define and make decisions about their bodies and health. While we celebrate this initial win, NAPAWF will continue to fight and push for a health care system that works for all of us.”
