Sugar Pie DeSanto

Sugar Pie DeSanto is an R&B singer who was popular in the 50's and 60's. She was born in 1935 in New York City but her family moved to San Francisco soon after. Her father was a Filipino former seaman. Her mother was a Black concert pianist who first taught DeSanto about music.

She toured with Johnny Otis in the fifties, and in 1960, her single "I Want To Know" hit number 4 on the Hot R&B chart. Sugar Pie was known for her energetic live performances. While her popularity faded after the sixties, she never stopped writing and recording new music into the new millenium. Her latest record, "Sugar's Suite," was released in fall 2018.

DeSanto was diagnosed with cancer in early 2018 and took a break from performing after finishing recording "Sugar's Suite." She is optimistic about fighting cancer and is eager to get back on stage. She remarked in an interview last year, "I had the surgery on my back a couple of years ago, but still, that don’t stop me. If I feel good, I’m gonna do it!"
